海外医療情報

Sixty-three more people have been infected with salmonella linked to raw turkey products in an outbreak that began in November 2017, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday.”according to CNN News.

279 cases of salmonella associated with raw turkey in 41 states and the District of Columbia have been reported.  Of those, 107 people were hospitalized, and one death was reported in California.

There are many types and brands of raw turkey products in the U.S., and the CDC has been unable to find an origin for the outbreak.

Consuming contaminated food is main reason of transmitting Non-typhoidal salmonella.  Another risk factor is the handling of pet reptiles, like turtles.

It is important to cook thoroughly, and an internal temperature should be at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill organisms that may be present.  It is also important to wash hands before and after preparing raw meat.

Symptoms of salmonella illness include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Stomach cramping can begin as soon as 12 to 72 hours after exposure. Most people are ill for four to seven days and recover without treatment, but people who are younger than 5 years old and older than 65 years old may need special consideration.
