Measles vaccine recommended for those attending World Cup

Measles is a highly infectious -- and potentially fatal -- viral illness that is typically spread by breathing or coughing.   In fact, outbreak of measles occurred in April and was spread from Okinawa to other prefectures in Japan.  Outside of Japan, warning levels of vaccine coverage have led to outbreaks across parts of Europe, including Russia.

During the World Cup, many people from different countries will visit Russia, and many countries such as Germany and Brazil have recently had large-scale outbreaks.  Because of this, it is important to check individual status for preventing infection.

ymptoms of measles include a runny nose, high fever, eye inflammation and a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. Complications such as blindness, brain inflammation and even death can occur in approximately 30% of cases.

The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention explain about the vaccination.  They say one dose of vaccine is about 93% and second does of vaccine is about 97% effective to prevent measles if the person is exposed to the virus.

Due to the high density of people attending from different countries like the World Cup, it is a perfect environment for measles outbreak.  If people go there, it is good to take vaccine for preventing infection.
